CHAPTER ELEVEN

Embreeville, Tennessee

Day Fifty-five. 3:00 P.M. EST

The sound of loud hammering filtered up the steep cliff as Beth’s voice echoed over the top of it. “Okay, I think that’s got it on this end. Peaches, how’s it looking over there? Harrison, if you drop that plank into the river, so help me, I’m going to blister you up one side and down the other. Hold fast!”

Beth’s pithy language and strident voice had peppered the air for the entire day. Thirty feet above her, on the plateau where Sean, Rose, and the group from Greeneville had set up a two-day camp, Rose exchanged glances with Kelly, the only other woman besides Beth who’d volunteered to make the trip to Greeneville.

“Sounds like they’re nearly done,” Rose commented as she turned the flat skillet bread she was making over to get the second side browned.

“Beth gets things done, that’s for sure.” Kelly tossed her blonde braid behind her head as she gave the chili simmering in the pot she was watching another stir. “Having a civil engineer like her with us from the beginning has made everything better, but⁠—”

“Harrison! What did I specifically say not to do? Go down and get it. I don’t care if you get wet! Now!”

The foul language that Harrison employed as he fetched whatever he had dropped was biting enough to curl Rose’s toes. Beth matched it with a streak of her own, the words bouncing off of the canyon walls in fast succession as they shouted at each other. Once they’d simmered down, Rose gestured to Kelly. “You were saying? Good to have Beth because of her civil engineering skills, but?”

Kelly smiled and pointed at the rim of the canyon. “She can get pretty heated if someone doesn’t follow her directions, is all. I had to cover my little one’s ears plenty when she was getting our camp organized after all that snow. When she’s not in charge of a building project, though, Beth’s a good friend.”

“Did you know her before the fires?”

“A little. All of us who’d invested in the silos got together a couple times a year for a potluck, and then at tax time when we went over all the shared expenses of the upkeep and what we owed in property tax. Larry’s dad was the one who owned the land originally, and Darla was in charge of us as a whole, and kept things running smoothly.”

“I bet she did.” The mention of Darla made Rose rub the place over her heart, the news of her death still fresh.

Kelly didn’t miss the gesture. “We all miss her, her husband, too.” There was a long silence as both of them continued to prep a huge evening meal that would feed twelve people. Kelly went on in her soft, melodious voice. “The couple who moved in to their place with L.D., they weren’t part of our original group. Rick and I were driving our final load of animals and feed from our homestead to the compound along with my parents and his brother and our little ones.
